“I want to bring to you, my readers, a greater understanding of this real Washington, DC, and why you should see our fight for justice as fundamental to realizing the American dream.” [From my first post, “Real People Live in Washington, DC]
My newsletter, ‘DClives,” exists, first, to educate readers, who may only think of DC as the federal capital, about the real DC where seven hundred thousand people live, work, and play – all without having any representation whatever in the halls of Congress. When you see DC residents as Americans like you, I hope you’ll come to understand why correcting this longstanding contradiction in the life of our democracy is fundamental to realizing the American dream of justice for all.
I was born in Nashville, Tennessee, but I have lived in DC since 1978 and consider it my home. This is where I raised my son, and I know it as a place with a strong sense of community, vastly different from the politically popular image of a crime-ridden, ill-managed cesspool. Since my retirement (yes, from the federal government) over a decade ago, I have blogged regularly (at DDinWDC) about issues affecting developmentally disabled people here in DC, and this has allowed me to become more familiar with all eight wards of DC. While I know some better than others, they all contribute to a distinct identity reflecting the unique history and geography that have defined the District for nearly two centuries. (For a quick history, have a look at my early posts, “The Constitution and Then Some” and “How Time Flies.”)
I know you have a lot of things to read, and I’m not aiming to overwhelm, so this newsletter is a weekly, which so far I’ve succeeded in posting on Mondays. This frequency gives me a chance, also, to think through what I want to say, do my homework, and hopefully produce a quality product that you’ll be glad to have read. I’m not here to waste your time or mine! While I greatly appreciate those of you who’ve voluntarily made a pledge of support, for now I’m not activating paid subscriptions because I don’t want any paywall between my content and potential readers – I just want to reach more people, so please help me do that.
Please feel free to let me know in comments if there are particular topics you’d like to see in future, and please, please recommend my publication, “DClives,” to your friends and family throughout the country! (Thanks, Pixabay, for the DC flag image!)
